Choke the opposing coach's neck
Inter Miami striker, Lionel Messi, grabbed the opposing coach's neck when his team met New York City FC in the opening match of the 2025 MLS regular season. As a result, Messi was sanctioned by the MLS Disciplinary Committee.
Inter Miami hosts New York City at Chase Stadium, Florida, Sunday (23/2/2025) morning WIB. In this duel, Lionel Messi appeared impressive by contributing two assists.
Messi became the creator of Tomas Aviles' goal in the 5th minute and Telasco Segovia in the 90+10 minute. Unfortunately, La Pulga failed to bring Inter Miami to victory because they had to settle for a 2-2 draw.
Mitja Ilenic scored a pair of Inter Miami goals in the 26th minute and Adrian Martinez in the 55th minute. Despite playing brilliantly, Lionel Messi was involved in a controversial incident on the field.
After the match, Messi seemed disappointed with the result. The Argentine national team captain was involved in several heated confrontations, including with the referee and the opposing coach.
The incident started when he argued with referee Rosendo Mendoza after the final whistle sounded. Lionel Messi looked angry and continued to approach the referee even though he had been warned to stay away.
This action made the referee give him a yellow card. However, Messi didn't stop there.
While leaving the field, he got into an argument with New York City FC assistant coach Mehdi Ballouchy. In this situation, Messi was seen strangling Ballouchy's neck, which sparked reactions from players and staff of both teams.
Sanctioned
As a result of his unsportsmanlike actions, Lionel Messi was sanctioned by MLS. He was deemed to have violated league policy regarding raising his hands to an opponent's face, head or neck.
"The MLS Disciplinary Committee has fined Inter Miami striker Lionel Messi an undisclosed amount," read an official MLS statement.
"He violated the policy of placing hands on opponents' faces, heads and necks following the end of Inter Miami's match against New York City FC on February 22," the statement continued.
