Asking for Messi's signature, Mexican referee gets 6 month sanction
The referee from Mexico, Marco Antonio Ortiz Nava, was banned from officiating matches in competitions in the CONCACAF zone (Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Football) for six months after asking for Lionel Messi's autograph.
CONCACAF initiated disciplinary action against Ortiz Nava after the incident that occurred on February 19.
At that time, after the final whistle of the match between Inter Miami CF and Sporting Kansas City in the CONCACAF Champions Cup—which Inter Miami won with a score of 1-0—Ortiz Nava approached Messi to ask for an autograph.
This request was made for his family members who have special needs.
Ortiz, known by the nickname "El Gato", was seen approaching Lionel Messi.
Initially, many thought he was asking for a Messi jersey, following the Messi-mania trend that has hit many fans. However, it was later revealed that he was actually asking for an autograph.
In its official statement last week, CONCACAF confirmed that the referee's actions were "not in line with the Confederation's Code of Ethics for match officials".
They also added that Ortiz Nava had admitted his mistake, apologized for the incident, and accepted the disciplinary punishment imposed by CONCACAF.
Despite being sanctioned at CONCACAF level, Ortiz Nava is still allowed to officiate matches in Liga MX. In fact, he was still the referee in the Mexican League match between Puebla and Club Tijuana, last Friday.
According to the same source, if Ortiz Nava commits similar offenses again in the future, he could be subject to indefinite punishment.
